In practice: most of the buy links on this site go to Amazon, and if you click one and buy something, we may receive a commission. It costs you nothing extra — the price you pay is the same whether you arrived via this site or typed the product name into Amazon yourself.
How the links work
Every buy link on this site is marked as an advertisement, carries the appropriate rel attributes so search engines treat it as a paid link rather than an editorial endorsement, and passes through a redirect on our own domain before reaching the retailer. That redirect exists so a retailer can be changed in one place rather than by rewriting articles, and it is excluded from search indexing.
The #ad label under each buy button links back to this page, so the disclosure is one click away from every commercial link rather than buried in a footer.
About prices
We do not display live prices. There is no price feed on this site, so every buy button reads “Check price on Amazon” and the retailer’s own page is the price of record. Prices on Amazon change frequently and anything we published would be out of date.
Where a dollar figure does appear — a supply price inside a cost-per-page calculation, or a manufacturer list price — it is labeled with the source we read it from and the date we read it, and it is presented as arithmetic as at that date rather than as a current price. The full method.
Why commission does not change a recommendation
You should not simply take our word for this, so here is the checkable version: our recommendations frequently point at the cheaper machine. The single most repeated piece of advice on this site is that somebody printing under about twenty pages a month should buy an inexpensive mono laser rather than an expensive ink tank printer. That advice reduces what we earn every time we give it, and it is on nearly every page.
Concretely, we do not:
- accept payment for placement or for a favorable mention;
- rank products by what they pay us;
- change an opinion after a link is added;
- accept manufacturer input into what appears here.
Amazon is the retailer on essentially every link because that is where these products are and where most readers will buy them, not because of an arrangement specific to this site. Our editorial policy sets out the rest, including what we do and do not test.
What we do and do not earn on
We earn on qualifying purchases made through Amazon links. We do not earn anything from links to manufacturers’ own sites, from the news articles and industry sources we cite, or from the calculator. Those links are there because they are useful or because a claim needs a citation.
