How long does toner last in a laser printer?
Toner life is rated in pages rather than time. A Brother TN830 is rated at 1,200 pages and a TN830XL at 3,000 at the ISO 5% coverage standard. For a household printing fifty pages a month, that is roughly two years and five years respectively.
The reason this question is confusing is that it is usually asked about time and always answered in pages. Both are useful, so this page gives you the conversion.

The top rows are the useful ones for most households, and they explain something that puzzles people: if a cartridge lasts five years, why does toner feel expensive? Because you are looking at the price of the cartridge rather than the price of a page.
Does unopened toner expire?
Not in any practical sense. Toner is a dry plastic powder with no solvent to evaporate, so an unopened cartridge keeps for years in a cool, dry place. Manufacturers print dates on cartridges, and in practice they are conservative.
The one genuine storage risk is extreme humidity, because a powder can absorb moisture and clump. A normal indoor cupboard is fine; an unheated damp garage is not ideal.
This is also the answer to the related question — do laser printers dry out — and it is the whole reason a laser suits sporadic printing.
Why yours runs out sooner than rated
Coverage. Rated yields assume about 5% of the page covered. Dense text, tables with shading, or anything with a logo uses more.
Short print jobs. Lots of one-page jobs use slightly more toner per page than one long job, because each job has start-up overhead.
The starter cartridge. If the printer is new and toner ran out fast, it was probably the 700-page starter rather than a full cartridge.
Low-toner warnings arrive early. Printers warn conservatively, and a cartridge showing a warning frequently has a meaningful number of pages left.
The other consumable
A laser has a drum as well as toner, replaced separately. Brother rates the DR830 on the models we cover at approximately 15,000 pages. Most households will never reach it — at fifty pages a month that is twenty-five years — but it belongs in the sum if you print heavily, and almost no laser roundup mentions it.

Not meaningfully. Toner is a dry powder with nothing to evaporate, so an unopened cartridge keeps for years in a cool, dry place. Extreme humidity can cause clumping, so avoid storing spares somewhere damp.

Most often because it was the starter cartridge supplied with the printer, which Brother rates at only 700 pages. Otherwise it is coverage: rated yields assume about 5% of the page covered and real documents usually use more.
