There is one good reason to buy a color laser at home, and it is not cost. Here is the case, made honestly, and the cheaper alternative for everyone else.

A color laser is the right purchase for a narrow and genuine case: occasional color that has to be crisp, on a machine that will sit idle between jobs. If that is not you, almost everything else on this site is cheaper.
How we picked
We did not rank on cost per page here, because if cost per page were the criterion no color laser would appear at all. Instead we ranked on the combination the technology uniquely serves: color output that tolerates long idle periods. Automatic duplexing and separate rather than combined cartridges were requirements.
The other two picks are deliberately not color lasers. A roundup that pretends the category is the right answer for everybody who searched for it would be selling rather than advising, and the alternatives are cheaper by margins large enough to matter.
The one good reason
Toner cannot dry out. An inkjet left unused for three months may need a print head clean and, in the worst case, may have a clogged nozzle. A color laser left unused for three months prints a perfect page on the ninety-first day.
If you need color and you cannot promise regular use — a home office that prints color proposals a few times a year, a household that prints color only for school projects — that property is worth paying for. It is the only case where a color laser beats a tank printer on anything that matters.

The first two rows are Toner Buzz’s figures, quoted for context rather than claimed as ours. The gap between the top and bottom rows is roughly tenfold, and it is why this page recommends against its own category for most readers.
And you are maintaining four cartridges rather than one. The black cartridge on a color laser is priced similarly per page to a mono laser’s; the expense is the three colors alongside it.
Where color laser output genuinely wins
Crisp color text and line art — charts, diagrams, colored headings. Fused toner does not spread along paper fibers.
Water and smudge resistance. A fused page survives handling and spills far better than dye ink.
Speed on long color documents, and no waiting for ink to dry.
Complete indifference to idle time. The whole argument.
And where it does not
Photographs. A color laser cannot produce a photographic print of any quality — toner on glossy paper is not what that technology is for, and no specification changes it. If photographs are any part of the plan, this is emphatically the wrong machine; the photo page covers the right one.

Included honestly, because for most households considering a color laser this is the better buy. A four-color page costs a small fraction of a cent here against published color laser figures of between 12 and 15 cents a page.
The trade is that it is an inkjet: it wants to be used every couple of weeks, and its pigment black is not the right ink for glossy photographs. If you can meet that first condition, the cost argument is not close.

The option nobody sells you. If your color printing is genuinely occasional — a few dozen pages a year — a mono laser plus a print shop for the rest is cheaper than any color printer, simpler than owning two machines, and the output is better than either.
We earn less recommending this than recommending a color laser. It is still the right advice for a lot of people, and this page would be dishonest without it.
